X-5, X-4, X-3, X-2, … what is next in the series?
One of the bonuses of helping out the Sci-Fi London crew is that I get given piles of goodies on occasion. The haul is often varied, with my current “to do stuff with” pile including a book on the science of the Hitchhikers Guide, a badge from the zombie film “Colin”, DVDs of the TV shows Legion of Fire (Croydon Branch) and Triangle, and a stack of movies varying from Children of the Corn and Scanners to Casshan and Voltron to A Better Tomorrow 2 to Tokyo Decadence and the Mary Carey star vehicle “Pervert“. However, last time, as I was leaving, bossman Louis shoved a pair of CDs in my hand and said “Have a listen to these, they’re rather good”. They sat on the side for a bit, but I dug them out yesterday for a listen – two CDs containing mp3 versions of all 126 episodes of X Minus One.
I’d not heard of the program before, apart from having seen it referenced at the bottom of the SFL podcast page (the one that I look after, in as much as I fiddle the podcast RSS feed by hand whenever a new one appears) but I do like classic science fiction and overblown radio productions, so it’s right up my street. From the crackly introductory countdown to the “next week … <something MYSTERIOUS>” it’s rather excellent. So far I’m only four episodes in and looking through the 122 remaining (including repeats) I can see a few stories that I’ve read, but with the promise of Heinlein, Pohl, Dick, Asimov and Bradbury in the mix I’ve got a pile of commute ready radio plays ready to go.
Here’s an episode – Robert Heinlein’s “Universe”:
Other than the four episodes at the bottom of the Sci-Fi London webpage the episodes are out on the web at archive.org and also as a (seemingly stalled) podcast.
They also seem to play rather well through my shiny Sony Reader…
