Python does my bidding

I like it when people put things online in a way that my brain works with and I especially like that when it’s people who I like. I like things I like and I like to like the things I like. Like, yeah.

So, The Monty Python team, or at least their incredibly well paid and slightly talented marketing team, have decided to sell the various Python merchandise in a way that I thoroughly approve of – by giving people free stuff and saying “if you like that, please go and buy stuff and keep these old men in the manner in which they have become accustomed”.

So, there is now a Monty Python youtube channel with a bunch of clips on from the shows and films as well as a couple of snippets from interviews (at first I thought the Cleese ones were from the Seesmic session that led to some amusing comments about Sarah Palin, but they’re not) to replace the rather crappy quality ones that people had been naughtily uploading already. The introductory video above says it perfectly – The Pythons are not known for their love of doing stuff for free and the explicitly stated reason for doing this is to get us all to go and spend money at their webstore. This is “How To Do It” – give people a teaser and if they like it then provide a way to buy more of your stuff and give you their hard earned cash.

My ideal would be if they had everything up for free and people paid for things if they liked them and/or wanted to keep them, but people aren’t honest (myself included) and the “throw a pound in the hat if you liked it” model barely works for buskers, let alone when there’s not a man with a guitar to stare down the weak looking punters as they try to avoid eye contact as they shuffle through an underpass. However, this is the next best thing and in a way may even be better – my poor beleaguered brain is trying to rejig itself at the moment and who knows what may fall out at the end of this reshuffle.
