The Sad Thing Is…
I’ve mentioned them before, but I do rather like Shaimus. Not only did they put out a top track in Guitar Hero (the almost title song, All Of This) and a very different but equally excellent album, but I can seemingly invoke them by mentioning their name on my blog. Hello Evan, if the mystical power of the internets has drawn you to me again.
Ever since picking up Paper Sun through their website I’ve been keeping an eye out for new choons as well as the potential for them reaching this side of the world, as LA is a very long way away, with both a big chunk of land in the way as well as that big blue wobbly thing that work sometimes get me across. Anyways, they’ve got their new album (The Sad Thing Is, We Like It Here) out, a situation that I know about not only because have I seen it on their website, but also because I now have my copy of said shiny disc in my sweaty paw, complete with a signed cover. Ta muchly lovely Shaimus people, who I now realise didn’t even charge me extra postage (or actually any, as I preordered it) to fling my CD as far as the UK. If I can get a least one person reading this to buy the album on iTunes I feel I will have done my bit towards helping with the airmail.

I like bands who do stuff on the internet, recently chatting with at least half of Georgia Wonder on Twitter (they have a rather good free EP that’s worth a grab) and firing messages in Ben Kweller’s general direction after his appearance on Letterman last night prompted his asking for links to a video of it. I’m off to Canterbury to shoot my brother’s band (Black Sun Down) this weekend (photographs, obviously. Guns make me jump) with a hope to help him beef up their web presence as well as getting me in front of a few more bands with my camera. They’re playing a gig in Crouch End on Saturday, if anyone wants to come along and throw beer at my younger and thinner sibling.
With the lowered barrier to music publishing that the internet provides, as it also does with books, film, etc, etc, it’s a load easier to get bands out of local-only participation and to the wider world. Easier, rather than easy, but it makes the world of music a lot smaller. Now to try and organise a trip to LA to coincide with a Shaimus gig…
