I met Jimmy (Edgar) Wilds for the second time today and he is still beaming and so very proud of being in this parade, he is such a lovely gentleman and holds his photographs of this day with pride, this day made this a very very happy man indeed.

I've got a 25w Maplin special (that I need to apply a screw driver to as the whole metal end is getting wobbly) and I suspect that'll do me for now. As long as noone lets me play with a better one...

Of course, you'll now get Soldering Iron Envy. I started with a crappy 15W Antex and then got a job in an electronics firm where I used a classic Weller TCP iron. I saved my pennies and bought a nice temperature-controlled iron for £50 when I was 16. Then I had another job in another factory and used a Metcal SP200 (RS http://uk.rs-online.com/web/2962427.html). Nothing else is quite the same afterwards. Sadly, I can't justify £250+VAT!

Oh my God I am so jealous! Oh how I long for a Breville. It reminds me of my student days. I always thought buttering both sides of the bread was my 'secret' until I found out loads of other people were doing it too. What a wally. Those beans can be so dangerous though. I actually got a bean burn on my chin once. In the shape of a bean.

That brought a tear to my eye, it did. I was given a sandwich toaster by my colleagues when I moved into my first house, and it gave sterling service for some twenty-off years.

Then a few years ago I redicovered it languishing in a drawer in the kitchen, and couldn't face scraping off several decades worth of accumulated grease and fossilised cheese. With feelings of extreme guilt I consigned it to the bin; it was in such a state that recycling it was out of the question.

I've resisted the temptation to buy another maker solely by convincing myself that I needed to get one that could also make waffles, but thanks to your story I'm now oh-so-close to caving in and getting one.

Cheese, baked beans and bacon was my favourite. Bacon and fried egg was good, too - just break the egg over the lower slice and it'll be done to a turn by the time the bread is crisp and golden... No, I don't have a problem. I can stop any time I want. I know I can.
